    “Letter recognition and phonics exploration”

This app offers exploration of letters, phonemic sounds and the beginning of word construction. The pictures are difficult to identify. Rewards are offered in the shape of cute animals that can be 'played' with by moving them about the page. Limited appeal.

“Fun animals promote reading readiness ”

ABC Phonics helps provide the fundamentals of reading with engaging, lively animals that are used across all three of the app's activities. Preschoolers will enjoy the fun sounds and unlocking prizes as each level of mastery is completed. Narrations and letter sounds are slow and clear, providing an early introduction to phonics.

    “Cartoonish and annoying phonics activities”

The ABC Phonics Animals Alphabet Flashcards activities are intended to replicate phonics flashcards that a parent would review with their young child. Unfortunately these games are a poor substitute for the real thing. Not only are the graphics too cartoonish to allow a child to recognize what the picture actually is, but some of the information is inaccurate (for example, spelling out the word "ape" letter by letter using the short, rather than the long a sound).

Family Activities

Use some snap cards at home and explore the starting letter of each picture. Animal flash cards or flash cards that explore simple words/objects is important. Sort and classify into starting letter groups.

Offline, practice spelling the simple words of physical things in your child's world such as things in their room. Sound out each letter or letter blends as you spell the words. Spell and sound out the words in books, newspapers and signs. With the app, practice letter sounds on the activities that do not give a verbal prompt.

Some children will need assistance, particularly with the animal match game, as the representations of the animals may be different than other pictures they have seen (or, for that matter, from what the animal actually looks like).
