This app offers a digital twist on the classic matching game that everyone's deck of snap cards always becomes, with two different levels to scaffold development. Matching pairs is a fabulous game and children love it. It helps them to explore memory, patterns, prediction and elimination, that are all important cognitive and pre reading skills. I really enjoy the ease with which you can change the default photos to your own from your iphoto library. This feature makes the possibilities endless - explore your favourite things, members of your family (children in our modern world often live a significant distance from extended family and any way to keep them in children's minds is valuable), specified groups of items to help introduce new vocubulary i.e. things from the kitchen, school, farm animals etc. You could even introduce some matching of mandarin characters, vowel sounds, blended sound ... I could go on and on!
Go on a photo hunt for photographs to make more Photomatch games. Choose a subject and go on a hunt, perhaps you could choose 'Things that go!'. Set off together, iphone in hand and take pictures of things that go, a car, a bike, a truck, a bus etc. Talk about each one as you photograph it, what colour is it, how many wheels does it have, does it carry people or 'things', have you ever been on/in one!
