There are 4 topics in this app: Toys, People, Vehicles, and Sea Animals. All sections, except the one on People, use real photographs of objects and animals. The name of the object is shown right below the picture and once tapped, you can hear the word pronounced in a female voice. This is a great aid for word recognition. Each section presents the user with 10 vocabulary words. For each word introduced, a number is associated with it (from 1 to 10). A sea creature shows up when the number is clicked on. As with the other Toddler Time apps, this is a straight forward vocabulary app that introduces new words to children in the categories. The great visuals in this app are instrumental to helping your child learn vocabulary words on their own. Developer Feedback Perhaps have a couple of matching activities (matching word to picture or vice versa) to help the child reinforce what was covered in the app would be great. Another way to extend this to older children could be to use the words in each section and make it into a reordering of letters activity, or fill in the missing letters game. Either way, it can help the older children to remember how the word is spelled, and is good for word recognition and vocabulary enhancement.
Pointing out the objects covered in the app in your daily life (e.g. on the way to school, at the store etc.) and asking your child to identify the object could be an easy way to help the child remember the new words learned in the app. As you see your child starting to remember some of the new words from the app, write out the words on index cards and have your child draw the corresponding picture behind the card. You can use these cards at a later time to play with your child and test his/her vocabulary. Marlene Activity: Big Words
